This treatment involves the injection of botulinum toxin-A (brand name Botox) into the masseter muscles to help reduce tooth grinding and clenching. The masseter muscles are our main chewing muscles in the jaw and can become enlarged due to overuse, especially during periods of stress. Not only does this action cause headaches and jaw aches, but it also causes the muscle to increase in size, which can give a more square appearance to the face. Injecting Botox into these muscles can help relieve pain symptoms and has a side effect of slimming the jawline. Best results are seen after 2-3 regular treatments as it takes time for the enlarged, overused muscle to reduce in size.
However, it is important to note that Botox is a prescription-only medicine and a consultation to discuss suitability and treatment options will always be carried out. This treatment in particular will need careful clinical assessment as it is not suitable for all clients but can create brilliant results in the right ones. As a dentist, this is a procedure that Dr Jess has carried out hundreds of times and she will be well equipped to assess your suitability for treatment during the consultation.
